Insolvency proceedings for MV Werften begin on March 1st, marking the end of a chapter in German industrial history. In his new book “In the storms of transformation”, the historian Philipp Ther deals with the different strategies of two shipyards in Poland and Croatia during the transition from socialism to a market economy. And it shows that the transition to a market economy required more state intervention than the buzzword neoliberalism would suggest. An interview about the structural change in the West, the transformation in the East, the future of European shipyards between special shipbuilding and wind turbines and what can be learned from the turnaround in shipbuilding for the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
