Saluki Softball Receives $250,000 Videoboard Upgrade Thanks to Generous Donation
A $250,000 donation from alumnus Ronald “Ron” Smith has propelled the Southern Illinois University softball program forward with the installation of a new videoboard at Charlotte West Stadium. The upgrade signifies a substantial investment in the team’s facilities and fan experience.
The new videoboard represents more than just a technological advancement, according to the team’s head coach. “First and foremost, I want to thank Ron for both his generosity and his friendship with regards to our softball program,” she stated. “This videoboard is more than an upgrade to our field—it’s a powerful reminder of the enthusiasm and support behind our team. We are deeply grateful for this donation and the belief it shows in our student-athletes and our program.”
A Legacy of Support for SIU
Smith, a 1964 graduate with a degree in marketing and a 1966 master’s in business administration, has maintained a strong connection to Southern Illinois University throughout his life. His philanthropic contributions extend beyond the softball program, including significant donations to the Book Rental Scholarship Program, Saluki Athletics as a whole, and the College of Business and Analytics.
The donation comes at a pivotal moment for the program. The coach acknowledged a growing trend of major donations being directed towards football and basketball programs, expressing initial concerns that softball might be overlooked. “As a long-time coach in the new national landscape of massive donations by donors to football and basketball, I have been somewhat anxious that the softball program here at SIU may be left behind,” she explained. However, Smith’s commitment demonstrates a belief in the equal value of women’s sports and the specific merits of Saluki Softball.
Personal Connection Fuels Philanthropy
Smith’s passion for the sport is deeply personal. “The genesis of my love and support of Saluki Softball comes from me being a former player of the sport and someone who has two daughters who have been involved in athletics, even playing in college,” Smith shared. Currently residing in California, he remains a dedicated Saluki fan, holding season tickets for Saluki Football and consistently supporting the Blackout Cancer fundraiser.
A first-generation college student from Walsh, Illinois, Smith’s education at SIU proved foundational to his future success. Following graduation, he served for 30 months in Colombia, South America, with the Peace Corps, utilizing his business acumen to empower local farmers and fishermen. He later dedicated his career to healthcare, collaborating on the development of a community health center and managing a large medical clinic and cancer center in San Diego. He credits his SIU education with providing the expertise necessary for these endeavors.
Impact on Players and Future Success
The impact of the new videoboard extends beyond the immediate enhancement of the game-day experience. A senior player expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s amazing to see that we have donors who want to invest in our program. But also looking at the videoboard reminds me of all of the alumni who have laid the foundation here. It has made it possible for these donors to want to make an impact and be a part of our family.”
The coach emphasized the long-term benefits for the program. “It’s a gift that will impact our team for years to come,” she said. “Our players, both current and future, will now see more than just a score—they’ll see an investment and commitment to the long-term success of SIU Softball.”
