Sony Japan Uses 60-Hour Playtime Lottery as GTA 6 Demand Strains PS5 Pro Supply

Sony Japan has restricted PlayStation 5 Pro purchases through a lottery system requiring users to log 60 hours of gameplay, as surging consumer demand ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s November release strains global supply chains and storage component markets.

Anticipation for one of the industry’s largest upcoming software launches has collided headfirst with severe manufacturing constraints. As players rush to upgrade their hardware before Rockstar Games releases Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, supply chains already pressurized by artificial intelligence infrastructure demands are buckling under the weight of consumer interest. The title marks the first new numbered entry in the franchise since GTA V debuted back in 2013, generating immense anticipation across the gaming community.

Sony Imposes Playtime Rules

Sony Japan implemented a strict lottery system exclusively through the Sony Store to combat shortages and keep hardware out of the hands of resellers. Prospective buyers cannot simply join an online queue. Instead, the company requires applicants to link a Sony account that verifies at least 60 hours of confirmed playtime on either a PS4 or a PS5 between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. Anyone who falls short of that 60-hour threshold is barred from entering the lottery entirely.

Applications remain open until October 7, with winners notified by October 26, though clearing eligibility offers no guarantee of securing a machine. Successful participants are permitted to buy a single console, with deliveries scheduled for the first half of November—just in time for the game’s debut. Similar pre-order lotteries were previously utilized in the country surrounding the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Historically, PlayStation console sales in Japan have lagged behind Nintendo hardware due to higher price points, prompting Sony to introduce a region-locked, lower-priced SKU specifically for the domestic market. However, the impending arrival of Rockstar’s blockbuster has triggered an intense surge of interest centered specifically on the PS5 Pro, leaving standard PlayStation 5 models readily available on shelves.

Shortages Drive Up Hardware Prices

Premium Sony hardware is currently out of stock on Sony.com and trading on auction sites for $1,100 and above, while the inventory bottleneck extends far beyond Japanese retail channels. In September, Sony advised distributors that the console would remain constrained globally until 2027, pointing directly to temporary market supply constraints and high demand.

Industry analysts point to an infrastructure squeeze affecting memory and storage components as AI data center operators buy up vast quantities of essential parts. These component shortages have cascaded into price hikes across the ecosystem. Sony raised the U.S. retail price of the PS5 Pro by $150 to $899.99, while the standard disc-based console increased by $100. Sony cited continued pressures in the global economic landscape. PlayStation Plus subscription fees have likewise increased, while the cost of expanding internal storage has climbed dramatically, with officially licensed 8 TB SSD hardware listed at thousands of dollars.

India Faces Distribution Hurdles

While Japanese gamers face strict rationing over existing inventory, other regions have struggled to secure any official distribution at all. India has never received an official release for the PS5 Pro.
