Sony Offers PS5 Owners $400 for Unused Console Trade-Ins

PlayStation 5 owners in the United States began receiving direct console notifications in early November 2026, offering up to $400 in cash to trade in unused hardware through a partnership with refurbished electronics marketplace Back Market.

The push targets dormant hardware. The notification appears directly in the PS5 console feed to urge players to cash out if they are not using the device. The financial return depends heavily on the model and its physical condition.

Appraisal Ceilings and Hardware Requirements for the Back Market Trade-In

The headline figure serves as a maximum cap rather than a guaranteed payout. Reaching the peak valuation requires a specific combination of components.

  • A base disc-drive PS5 console
  • Two DualSense controllers
  • The original box, cables, and console stand

Units missing parts or showing wear marks drop below the maximum valuation before physical inspection. The Digital Edition of the console typically receives lower baseline quotes. Once a user initiates the process online, Back Market handles the transaction through free shipping and subsequent payment via bank transfer, credit, or gift card.

Market Pressures and the Push to Recirculate Hardware

Console manufacturers are targeting idle machines because a console left in its box generates no revenue. When a second-hand buyer picks up a recirculated system, that new user is likely to purchase games through the digital storefront and subscribe to online services.

Both prices are at all-time US highs. Price sensitivity is becoming a real problem.

Sony enacted a fresh price increase effective April 2, pushing the disc-drive model to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro to $899.99. Analysts attribute the cost hikes to a broader shortage of memory and storage chips squeezed by artificial intelligence data center demand.

Industry-Wide Trade-In Initiatives Ahead of Major Software Releases

Sony’s push mirrors a similar move by Microsoft. In October, US owners of Xbox Series X|S consoles received emails offering up to $375 back through Best Buy if they wished to trade in systems they no longer played.

Both manufacturers are encouraging users to offload unplayed machines just as major software hits the market. Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives on November 19, positioning itself just eight days before Black Friday.
