The match between Southampton and Preston North End, of the Championship (English Second Division), has been postponed due to a fire that started in a factory near St. Mary’s Stadium.

A factory located in front of the Southampton stadium caught fire this Wednesday afternoon, causing significant disruption in the area, where local authorities recommended residents stay away from the area and close the windows of their homes to avoid smoke poisoning.

Southampton, in a statement, announced that, after consulting with different entities, it has decided to postpone the match to a new date yet to be specified.

“We are very grateful for the cooperation of Preston and the EFL, while we understand the inconvenience this causes to fans. We hope they understand that we have to put the safety of the fans and the club’s workers before everything,” he said.
