Initial Reports and Victim Identification
On December 26th, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Charleston Police Department received multiple reports of gunshots in the vicinity of South Locust Street and South Green Street. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a fence behind a residence located at 301 South Franklin Street. Inside the vehicle, they found the body of Tristen Mackins, 21, of Mounds, Illinois.
Details of the Shooting and Crash
A preliminary investigation revealed that Mackins was traveling eastbound on West Cypress Street when one or more suspects began firing shots at his vehicle. The driver subsequently lost control, struck an electric pole, and ultimately crashed into a fence. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not yet released information regarding a potential motive.
Connection to Recent Violence
Investigators believe this homicide may be connected to at least two other recent incidents in Charleston. A previous homicide occurred on December 17, 2025. Earlier on December 26th, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a residence was struck by numerous gunshots, resulting in injuries to two individuals. This pattern of violence has prompted a heightened response from law enforcement.
