With Harry Kane and Joao Palhinha in the starting line-up, FC Bayern Munich has won its dress rehearsal for the start of competitive matches. Three days before the DFB Cup opener against second division newcomers SSV Ulm on Friday (8.45 p.m.), the dominant German record champions defeated the Austrian first division team WSG Tirol 3-0 (1-0) in front of 9,531 spectators in Unterhaching.
Kane scored the opening goal in the third minute of his 45-minute appearance. Joao Palhinha (48th), who was signed from Fulham FC for a reported 46 million euros, was successful with a volley shortly after half-time. Gabriel Vidovic increased the lead in the closing stages (80th).
However, coach Vincent Kompany’s team will be more challenged against Ulm in the first round of the cup. “It’s a knockout game, we’re looking forward to it,” said sports director Christoph Freund.
Kompany gave a total of four young players, including Adam Aznou (18), the chance to present themselves in the starting line-up. Regular players such as Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry and Aleksandar Pavlović were missing. The trio sat on the bench in civilian clothes and signed autographs in between.
At half-time, Kompany brought on three more young players for Kane, Kingsley Coman and Alphonso Davies. In the 50th minute, Tyrolean Stefan Skrbo missed the chance to equalise for the Austrians when he hit the crossbar.
Other FC Bayern players were not there at all. Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, who are reportedly about to move to Manchester United, were not in the squad, nor was Leon Goretzka. The German international, who is also considered a transfer candidate, was absent after suffering a blow to his hip, but was able to train during the day.
The referee made a comeback. Felix Brych (49) refereed a game for the first time since he tore his cruciate ligament in November last year. The Munich native is scheduled to play in the Bundesliga again this season.
