On Friday (September 1), the city of São Paulo confirmed the first case of canine rabies since 1983.

The dog infected with the disease was rescued a few days earlier in the Butantã neighborhood area, showing neurological symptoms. The animal died a day after receiving veterinary care.

The infection was confirmed by the Pasteur Institute, dependent on the state government. This agency is responsible for epidemiological surveillance and risk control of rabies and other viral encephalitis.

According to the Municipal Health Secretariat, the case is still under investigation and has already generated surveillance actions in the area. On September 1 and 2, the agents visited 384 homes and vaccinated 367 animals with the anti-rabies vaccine.
