Tragically, a white HB20 and a red Renault Sandero were carried away by the current, with at least two peopel inside the former.
Authorities have identified the missing individuals as Maria, 67, and Marcos, 68, an elderly couple whose son is in contact with emergency services. A complete search along the Pinheiros River was initiated on Friday but proved unsuccessful. Rescue operations are scheduled to resume on Saturday,November 17th,as teams continue to scour the area for any sign of the missing pair.
Beyond the vehicle incidents, first responders reported harrowing scenes of residents seeking refuge from the rising waters. Passengers in a truck were forced to climb onto the roof to escape the flood on Carlos Caldeira Filho, while buses near the João Dias Terminal were unable to navigate the wholly submerged roadways.
City on High Alert, Landslides Reported
Earlier in the day, the City Hall’s Climate Emergency Management Center issued a city-wide flood alert, with specific red alerts – indicating the highest level of risk – for Sapopemba, Guaianases, and Campo Limpo. A statement released by Civil Defence around 5 pm warned of “heavy rain spreading across the capital of São Paulo,” accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and the potential for hail.
The extreme weather also triggered a landslide in Mauá,a municipality within Greater São Paulo. A wall of a residence in the Jardim Zaira neighborhood collapsed, prompting a partial closure of the site and the relocation of residents to safety. Fortunately,no injuries were reported in connection with the landslide.
Unconfirmed Drowning and Mounting Emergency Calls

Preliminary reports indicated a man entered the floodwaters to assist individuals trapped in a submerged vehicle but did not resurface. Though, authorities later clarified that the drowning remained unconfirmed.
By 6:30 pm on friday, emergency services had received a total of 29 calls related to floods and flooding, along with three reports of fallen trees and one incident involving a structural collapse. affected neighborhoods included Vila Andrade, Capão Redondo, and Morumbi.

According to the Climate Emergency Management center (CGE), the intense rainfall was attributed to a combination of high temperatures and abundant atmospheric moisture, interacting in a “slow, isolated way, varying between light, moderate and strong.”
