SpaceX Falcon 9 Launch Creates Space Jellyfish Across Southeast US

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Tuesday morning created a glowing, translucent space jellyfish cloud visible across multiple states in the Southeast, carrying more than 6,300 pounds of cargo toward the International Space Station.

Cape Canaveral Launch Lights Up the Southeast Sky

Skywatchers across a wide swath of the eastern United States caught an unexpected sight early Tuesday morning as a Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Liftoff occurred precisely at 6:33:44 a.m. EDT, sending the booster climbing through the atmosphere on a resupply mission for the orbiting laboratory.

The ascent generated a striking light show that stretched far beyond the launch site. Sightings and photographs of the phenomenon were recorded across Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia, and as far north as Roanoke, Virginia, as well as Grand Isle in Louisiana and the Tennessee River valley in Knoxville. Observers on the ground watched as the exhaust plume expanded into a luminous formation that many likened to science fiction.

Among those documenting the early-morning spectacle was Landon Braud, a high school teacher and coach from Ascension Parish, who successfully captured photographs over Grand Isle just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Additional visual submissions from residents, including video footage shared by Chris degothseir showing the rocket launch and the separation of a booster flying off to the side over Jacksonville Heights South, poured in through regional media platforms like SnapJAX.

The Physics Behind the High-Altitude Glow

The distinctive jellyfish-shaped plume appears when a rocket launch coincides with a narrow window around dawn or dusk. While observers on the ground remain in pre-dawn darkness, the rocket climbs rapidly into regions of the upper atmosphere that are already bathed in direct sunlight.

As the Falcon 9 ascended, its exhaust released water vapor and carbon dioxide into the thin, low-pressure air of the upper atmosphere. Those gases rapidly expanded outward into a broad, rounded bulb, while vapor exhaust froze into ice crystals. Sunlight striking those high-altitude particles illuminated the crystallized gases into a translucent canopy with wispy trails resembling tentacles.

SpaceX CRS-35 Mission Carries Supplies to Space Station

Beneath the visual spectacle lies a routine commercial resupply flight designated as NASA’s SpaceX CRS-35 mission under the agency’s Commercial Resupply Services program. The vehicle carried a Dragon cargo spacecraft packed with more than 6,300 pounds of scientific experiments, equipment, and supplies for the crew aboard the International Space Station.

Flight operations officials noted that this particular voyage marked the fourth flight for Cargo Dragon spacecraft C211 and the eighth flight for the Falcon 9 first-stage booster. The Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, Oct. 15, completing its journey to dock at the zenith port of the space station’s Harmony module.
