SpaceX Launches 21 Satellites for US Military After Delay

SpaceX launched 21 data transport satellites for the U.S.

SpaceX launched 21 data transport satellites for the U.S. Space Force from Vandenberg Space Force Base on October 10, 2026, following a five-day delay caused by a last-minute countdown abort. The mission expands a low-Earth orbit constellation designed to support global military communications and missile tracking.

A Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 3:39 a.m. EDT. The vehicle carried 21 satellites built by Northrop Grumman for the Space Development Agency, marking the fourth launch dedicated to assembling the agency’s Tranche 1 architecture.

The flight overcame a series of false starts that began on October 5, when an automated safety system halted the initial countdown just seconds before liftoff. SpaceX reported that vehicle and payload remained healthy while engineering teams reset for subsequent windows.

The mission encountered multiple setbacks earlier in the week. During the initial attempt on October 5, the countdown stopped automatically at approximately T-58 seconds after onboard computers took control. Subsequent launch windows on Tuesday and Wednesday were scrubbed or postponed as engineers reviewed telemetry.

Following additional schedule adjustments, the Falcon 9 successfully cleared the pad during a window early Saturday morning. Approximately seven minutes after liftoff, the first-stage booster — designated B1103 on its sixth flight — returned to Landing Zone 4 at Vandenberg, producing an audible sonic boom across neighboring counties.

Building the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture

The 21 spacecraft delivered to low-Earth orbit are data transport nodes intended for the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. The agency describes the network as an interconnected system of optical crosslinks designed to provide tactical communications and missile warning capabilities.

“a mesh network of optically connected satellites in low Earth orbit [LEO] that enable global military tactical communications and missile warning, indication and tracking capabilities.”

Tranche 1 represents the initial warfighting capability phase for the architecture. When fully assembled, the tier will comprise 154 operational satellites, including 126 data transport spacecraft and 28 missile tracking vehicles, supplemented by four missile defense test satellites equipped with high-fidelity infrared sensors.

Northrop Grumman’s First Tranche 1 Delivery

The October 10 flight marked the first time Northrop Grumman delivered satellites for the Tranche 1 program, joining previous manufacturers York Space Systems and Lockheed Martin in a multi-vendor procurement strategy. Gurpartap Sandhoo noted that introducing large quantities of new spacecraft brings distinct operational challenges.

It’s one thing to go through launch and early ops of one, two, maybe even three or four satellites.

With four of nine contracted SpaceX missions now completed, eighty-four transport satellites have reached orbit to date. Agency officials plan to complete remaining launches by late spring 2027 to establish full operational readiness for the Department of Defense.
