SpaceX launched 27 Starlink internet satellites into low Earth orbit atop a Falcon 9 rocket from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base on September 6, 2026. The first-stage booster completed its 19th flight by landing safely on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific Ocean.

Vandenberg Launch and Booster Milestone

The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 10:26 a.m. EDT. The vehicle rose through blue morning skies above California’s central coast, a notable departure from the heavy fog that frequently blankets the region. Sixty-two minutes after liftoff, the upper stage deployed the 27 spacecraft on schedule into low Earth orbit.

The first-stage booster, carrying the technical designation B1088, returned to Earth approximately 8.5 minutes after launch. It touched down in the Pacific Ocean on the SpaceX drone ship Of Course I Still Love You. This flight marked the 19th mission for booster B1088.

That flight count reaches roughly halfway to the overall SpaceX reuse record of 37 flights. That record was set by booster B1067 during an Atlantic Starlink mission out of Florida on August 25.

Megaconstellation Growth and Flight Frequency

This mission represented the 103rd Falcon 9 flight of 2026. Out of those total missions, 80 have been dedicated directly to expanding the Starlink network.

Astronomer and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell calculates that the active satellite network currently comprises more than 11,000 operational spacecraft. SpaceX initiated the program in 2019 to provide high-speed internet access to global users, including rural and remote areas. The company has launched thousands of small satellites to maintain this low Earth orbit architecture.

SpaceX has put Florida-based Starlink missions on hold while preparing launch infrastructure for its next-generation architecture. Consequently, Starlink flights currently fly exclusively out of Vandenberg on the West Coast.

Shifting Operations on Florida’s Space Coast

The pause in Florida Starlink operations follows the final local mission for the foreseeable future. That flight lifted off at 5:33 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, from Launch Complex 40 in Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The launch utilized booster B1067 on its record-breaking 37th flight, deploying 29 broadband satellites before the hardware returned to land on the Atlantic drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas.

That historic booster subsequently arrived at Port Canaveral aboard a support vessel before moving to Kennedy Space Center for refurbishment. While Brevard County residents grew accustomed to frequent weekly Starlink flights, Falcon 9 will still operate from Launch Complex 40 for other payloads, including NASA’s upcoming Crew-13 mission.

Preparing for the Starship Era

The temporary cessation of Florida Starlink flights clears the way for infrastructure upgrades. SpaceX is actively retrofitting Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A to support Starship, the company’s massive next-generation vehicle currently undergoing test flights from Starbase in Texas.

Company leadership intends to rely on Starship to deploy next-gen Starlink V3 satellites. These upgraded spacecraft are larger and more capable than current V2 models. Elon Musk has stated an eventual goal of building out a network consisting of roughly 100,000 Starlink V3 units in low Earth orbit.

Development testing is already underway. During a July 24 test flight designated Flight 13, a prototype Starship deployed 20 Starlink V3 satellites from an onboard payload dispenser during a suborbital coast before the vehicles burned up in the atmosphere.
