/ Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stressed on Wednesday that the countries of the world cannot help the Palestinians unless the State of Palestine is recognized, considering this recognition as “Europe’s geopolitical interest.”

Spanish government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria said that Sanchez will meet in the coming days with the heads of government of countries, including Norway and Portugal, to talk about “recognition of Palestine,” according to Agence France-Presse.

Sanchez told the Spanish representatives that “the international community cannot help the Palestinian state unless it recognizes its existence,” adding that such recognition falls within the framework of “Europe’s geopolitical interest,” and that Spain is “ready to recognize a Palestinian state” without setting a date for that.

It is noteworthy that Sanchez, who is considered one of the most critical voices of Israel in the European Union, said in press statements during a tour in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, that Spain intends to do this by the end of next June.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza, the Socialist Prime Minister has been trying to push within the European Union for this recognition.

At the end of last March, he issued a joint declaration with his Irish, Maltese and Slovenian counterparts, confirming that they are “ready to recognize Palestine” if it makes a “positive contribution” to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In the same context, Spanish government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria announced on Tuesday that Sanchez will meet in the coming days with the heads of government of a number of countries, including Norway and Portugal, to talk again about “the necessity of moving forward towards recognizing Palestine.”

On the other hand, Sanchez, who has been strongly critical of Israel since the start of the attack on Gaza, denounced on Wednesday the “completely disproportionate response” by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to the “terrorist attack launched by Hamas” on October 7, 2023, considering that it “undermines decades of international humanitarian law and threatens to destabilize the Middle East and thus the entire world.”
