LOS ANGELES, January 8, 2026 – Former reality television star Spencer Pratt announced his candidacy for Los Angeles mayor, following the devastating Palisades Fire that impacted his property and fueled his criticism of the city’s response.
Spencer Pratt Enters LA Mayoral Race After Palisades Fire Criticism
Pratt, who rose to prominence alongside his wife, Heidi Montag, on the reality series “The hills,” has been a vocal critic of authorities’ response to the blaze. He specifically targeted Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass for what he perceives as inadequate action.
What caused the Palisades Fire? The fire erupted on the morning of January 7, 2025, quickly spreading across thousands of acres. Powerful Santa Ana winds, forecast for days, fueled the 23,700-acre blaze, making it the ninth-deadliest and third-most destructive wildfire on record in California.
Speaking at a “They Let Us Burn” rally hosted by the Palisades Fire Residents Coalition on Wednesday, Pratt declared, “Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles, and I’m done waiting for someone to take real action. That’s why I am running for mayor.” He continued, “But let me be clear, this just isn’t a campaign — this is a mission, and we are going to expose the system. We are going into every dark corner of L.A.politics and disinfecting the city with our light. LA is going to be camera-ready again.”
Pratt and Montag, who also appeared on “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here” and the British version of “Celebrity Big Brother,” married in 2008 and have two children. On the day the Palisades Fire began, Pratt shared video footage of the flames and smoke, later documenting the extensive damage to their property and the loss of their belongings.
The palisades Fire claimed twelve lives and resulted in the destruction of more than 6,800 structures. Pratt’s decision to enter the mayoral race comes as incumbent Karen Bass, former Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner, and over a dozen other candidates are already vying for the position. The primary election is scheduled for june 2.
Candidates interested in running must file a declaration of intention between February 2 and February 7. Bass was initially elected mayor in 2022, defeating Los Angeles businessman and developer Rick Caruso.
