Spotify has launched User Notes, a new feature allowing users aged 16 and older on free and premium plans in select markets to attach personal captions and memories to individual tracks within their playlists and libraries, making shared music discovery more interactive and personal.
Spotify is rolling out a significant update to how listeners interact with their music libraries. The streaming platform has introduced TechCrunch, an in-app capability designed to let people attach personal text annotations directly to individual songs.
Rather than treating playlists as static catalogs of audio files, the new feature turns individual tracks into mini-archives. Listeners can jot down why a specific track made it into a mix, record the date they first encountered it, or document specific life events tied to the music.
How User Notes Work Inside Playlists and Libraries
The mechanics of adding a note are straightforward. Users can access the feature by navigating to any playlist they have created, or a playlist containing tracks they have added, and tapping the three-dot menu beside a song. Selecting the option to add a note opens a text field where a short caption can be written and saved.
Once published, the annotation appears directly beneath the track. Depending on the playlist settings, other users may also be able to see it if they view the shared collection. When a note is visible to others, the author’s name is linked directly to their public profile, bridging private cataloging with social discovery.

By keeping User Notes focused purely on human-written context rather than background algorithm tuning, the platform carves out territory that competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music have not entered in the same way. The feature essentially introduces a journaling layer to song curation, turning old playlists into digital time capsules for road trips, relationships, and milestones.
Rollout Limits, Eligibility, and Additional Platform Updates
The feature is currently subject to specific regional and demographic boundaries. Spotify has made User Notes available exclusively to individuals aged 16 and older. The rollout applies across both free and premium subscription tiers, though access is restricted to select markets during the initial deployment phase.
Alongside User Notes, the company debuted a separate tool called Running Mode for premium subscribers in select countries. That workout-oriented addition matches music tracks to a runner’s specific pace and workout preferences, while User Notes focuses on long-term memory preservation.
