Spotify Price Hike Looms as Streaming Giant Faces Pressure from Record Labels
Spotify users may soon face increased subscription costs, perhaps as early as the first half of 2026, according to a new report from the Financial Times. The potential price increase comes less than a year after the streaming platform last adjusted its Premium subscription fee, raising it from $10.99 to $11.99 in June 2024.
As that last adjustment, Spotify has continued to enhance its service, adding features like AI-powered playlist creation, direct messaging capabilities, and lossless audio – a feature long-anticipated by audiophiles and previously rumored to be reserved for a separate, higher-priced tier. Surprisingly, when lossless audio finally arrived in September,it was rolled out to all Premium subscribers at no additional cost. Shortly after, Spotify implemented price increases in several international markets, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and Switzerland.
However, the potential US price hike may be driven by more than just new features. The Financial Times reports that record labels are actively pressuring both Spotify and Apple Music to raise their subscription fees. These labels argue that current pricing hasn’t kept pace with inflation and lags significantly behind the cost of comparable video streaming services like Netflix, were ad-free streaming begins at $17.99 per month, compared to Spotify’s $11.99.
According to sources familiar with the matter, a modest $1 increase in the monthly US subscription price could boost Spotify’s annual revenue by as much as $500 million. The company is also planning to introduce music videos for Premium subscribers in the US, a move that could further justify a price adjustment.
Spotify is also focused on achieving sustained profitability. One analyst noted that the company’s financial performance is increasingly scrutinized by investors, making revenue growth a key priority.
While users await the arrival of Spotify Wrapped – the platform’s annual personalized music summary – they are also keeping an eye on competitor YouTube Music, which recently launched its 2025 Recap. Spotify is expected to unveil its own year-end review next week.
