Marco Rose Emerges as Frontrunner for Tottenham Managerial Vacancy Amidst De Zerbi Uncertainty
Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new manager has taken a dramatic turn, with Marco Rose unexpectedly surging to the top of the betting odds on Friday. This shift comes as doubts emerge regarding the availability of previously favored candidate, Roberto De Zerbi.
The north London club’s rapid descent towards the relegation zone – currently just five points clear – prompted the dismissal of manager Thomas Frank on Wednesday. A recent 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United, marking their only win in the last eleven Premier League matches, ultimately sealed Frank’s fate after a mere 38 games in charge.
Spurs now face a dual challenge: immediately stabilizing the team to avoid a potential relegation battle, and simultaneously identifying a long-term appointment capable of restoring the club to its former glory.
Prior to the latest developments, Mauricio Pochettino had been linked with a return to the club, though any move would be contingent on the conclusion of his commitments with the United States national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. De Zerbi, recently departing from Marseille, appeared to be a viable option, but a new report casts doubt on his immediate availability.
According to a Sky Sports journalist with close ties to the club, De Zerbi is currently prioritizing a break from management. “Roberto De Zerbi…is not looking to take a job right now as it stands & having a break according to people close to him,” the journalist explained via social media.
This development has propelled Rose, who has been without a club since leaving RB Leipzig last March, into the frontrunner position. Bookmakers William Hill have slashed his odds to 5/4, while De Zerbi’s have drifted to 3/1.
“The market for who will replace Thomas Frank at Spurs has taken an interesting twist this morning, with Marco Rose – a new addition to the market – our new outright favourite,” stated a spokesperson for William Hill. “The German has been immediately installed as the 5/4 frontrunner for the role, with previous market leader Roberto De Zerbi drifting from 6/5 to 3/1. The race is far from a foregone conclusion, however, with John Heitinga (5/1) and Mauricio Pochettino (9/2) also in contention.”
The timing of De Zerbi’s departure from Marseille had initially appeared advantageous for Tottenham, given Frank’s swift dismissal. However, the Italian’s apparent reluctance to immediately return to management has opened the door for Rose, who could initially be appointed on an interim basis with the potential for a permanent role should he impress.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Pochettino has already received an offer to become the permanent successor to Frank. An accompanying prediction from a pundit offers reassurance to supporters, suggesting the club will avoid relegation.
Further complicating the managerial search, a 61-year-old Tottenham legend has been unexpectedly mentioned as a potential interim candidate, though concerns have been raised regarding this appointment. Ferencvaros coach Robbie Keane’s name has also surfaced, with reports indicating he abruptly ended a television interview when questioned about the role, coinciding with a significant drop in his betting odds.
Additionally, sources indicate that Michael Carrick, currently serving as interim manager at Manchester United, is also under consideration by Tottenham officials, should the Red Devils opt not to offer him the position on a full-time basis.
