President Wickremesinghe Emphasizes Protection of Hinduism in Sri Lanka

During a meeting with religious leaders in Jaffna today, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe made a strong statement in support of protecting Hinduism, calling it a “very ancient religion.”

Wickremesinghe expressed the need for separate consultative councils for all religions and stressed the importance of making decisions related to religious activities without the permission of the Director General, but with the approval of the heads of the respective councils.

“We agree that Hinduism is a very ancient religion. Everyone should also remember that Hinduism is protected in Sri Lanka,” the President stated.

Acknowledging the significance of Hindu temples, Wickremesinghe highlighted the importance of protecting Hindu gods and emphasized that no one should hinder Sinhalese people from worshipping in these sacred spaces.

Furthermore, the President addressed the origin of Islam in Sri Lanka, attributing it to the country’s business relations with Middle Eastern countries. He made it clear that the Sri Lankan government has not renounced any religion and welcomed any reports of injustice or mistreatment towards any religion, promising to take appropriate measures if necessary.

The President’s remarks emphasize the government’s commitment to religious freedom and protection of all religious practices in Sri Lanka, and his call for separate consultative councils highlights a potential shift in policy to ensure the equal representation and protection of all religions within the country.
