Sri Lanka has announced the star-studded team on Thursday (09 Sep, 2024) ahead of the T20 World Cup, which starts next month. All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will lead their team in the World Cup. Charith Asalanka will be his assistant.
Sri Lanka has also kept the experienced Angelo Mathews in the team. who returned to short format cricket earlier this year after three years. This will be Mathews’ sixth T20 World Cup appearance. He was a member of the World Cup winning team in 2014.
Besides, former short format captain Dasun Shanaka, current ODI captain Kusal Mendis and Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva are also in the team.
There are several all-rounders in the team. Along with skipper Hasaranga, Dunith Belalage, Dhananjaya and Kamindu Mendis are spin bowling all-rounders in this list. Besides, Mathews and Shanaka are reliable pace bowling all-rounders.
Mathisha Pathirana and Nuan Thushara will lead their pace bowling unit. Dushmanthe will be accompanied by Chamira and Dilshan Madushank.
Sri Lanka is in ‘D’ group in World Cup. Where their opponents are South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal. The Lankans’ World Cup mission will begin with a match against South Africa in New York on June 3.
