Vin Cox Joins Star Thoroughbreds as Bloodstock Consultant for 2026 Sales Season

A leading figure in Australian thoroughbred racing, Vin Cox, has accepted a bloodstock consultancy role with Star Thoroughbreds, effective for the 2026 Australasian yearling sales. This appointment follows Cox following his departure from Yulong earlier this year and signals a new chapter for the prominent syndication company as it transitions from the long-standing tenure of its previous advisor.

Cox, formerly holding key positions at Yulong, Godolphin, and Magic Millions, will lend his expertise to Star Thoroughbreds during the crucial yearling sales period. He spent six months on gardening leave after leaving Yulong in March, using the time to evaluate future opportunities within the racing and breeding industry.

The possibility arose following the retirement of Star Thoroughbreds’ long-time bloodstock advisor, Brett Howard. According to reports,Star Thoroughbreds’ principal,Denise martin, directly approached Cox,and the proposition immediately resonated with him.

“Look, it’s right in my sweet spot,” Cox stated. “I enjoy sales, I enjoy looking at yearlings and assessing yearlings. It’s working with high-end operators, and operators that work at an elite level, and that appeals to me immensely.”

Cox praised Martin’s integrity and business acumen, as well as the strength of Star Thoroughbreds’ existing partnership with leading trainer Chris Waller. “Denise is without reproach in terms of her ethics and business model,” he said. “And you’d have to say, working with a stable like the (Chris) Waller stable, he’s the gold standard of trainers in the country at the present time.” He also acknowledged the meaningful contributions of his predecessor, noting, “Brett’s done an astonishing job for Star Thoroughbreds, and I’ve known Brett, and been friends with Brett for close to 40 years.”

As leaving Yulong in September, Cox has been considering various options, including consultancy work and potential leadership roles. He revealed he had preliminary discussions with international racing organizations, but ultimately, the Star Thoroughbreds position proved the most compelling. While open to future executive positions, Cox expressed appreciation for the versatility that a consultancy role provides. “The flexibility I have currently appeals to me a lot,” he explained. “Having said that, if the right big gig came along, then I’d certainly look at it.” he currently serves as a director on the Victoria Racing Club board.

Star Thoroughbreds, founded in the 1990s, has established itself as a powerhouse in Australian syndication, boasting Group 1 victories with horses such as Sebring, Theseo, Espiona, Invincibella, Foxplay, D’Argento, Driefontein, Danglissa, and Aeliana. The company, known for its iconic purple and white stars silks, anticipates continuing its current purchasing strategy of acquiring approximately 22 to 25 yearlings annually, with the majority trained by Chris Waller and a select few raced in Tasmania under the guidance of Barry Campbell, Martin’s brother-in-law.

Howard’s firm,Randwick Bloodstock, had collaborated with star Thoroughbreds for the past eight years, building on the legacy of the late Steve Brem. Martin acknowledged Howard’s invaluable contributions, stating, “Star has enjoyed a wonderful association with Brett the last eight years… His contribution to our success has been immeasurable and appreciated, and we wish him the best in his retirement.” She further emphasized the importance of Cox’s appointment, calling it “a huge coup for us and we are looking forward to him representing Star Thoroughbreds at the major sales next year.”

Cox faces the challenge of building upon Howard’s successful track record of identifying promising yearlings for Star Thoroughbreds. Howard himself expressed confidence in the transition, stating, “It’s a testament to Denise that someone of Vin’s repute has joined her team. I’ve had an amazing journey with Star and I’m grateful for all the opportunities it afforded me. I wish Vin all the best in the role.”
