“The personality of the century that will never return”
MK continues to collect a wreath of memories of the director Sergei Soloviev, whose earthly path was cut short on December 13, 2021. The legendary musician Stas Namin told us about the last meeting, friendship spanning four decades and Cuban adventures with DiCaprio’s participation.
– We were friends with him for many, many years. I’ll even say this: somewhere in the mid-80s, this means – already 40 years. The last time we spoke was before my birthday. He was supposed to come on November 8 and said: “If possible, I will be in a wheelchair.” I replied: “Of course, yes, we will do everything.” And after that he disappeared: he did not answer the phone, apparently it was bad.
He is an absolutely amazing personality of a century that will never return. One of the few who stayed – and now he’s gone. This is the highest level of innate, genetic intelligence – this intelligence cannot be replaced by education. He had an extraordinary talent, not only cinematic, but also screenwriting and literary talent. It was impossible to tear yourself away from what he wrote. He was also a writer. But the main thing is his amazing kind heart. Throughout his life, a huge number of people are grateful to him – not only the students who studied with him at VGIK, not only the students who surrounded him and caught his every word, but also all his friends. Everyone was basking in his warmth. In cinema, which was then censored and formal, he also discovered, as a director, human warmth.
– What episode do you remember the most?
– We traveled with him. I invited him to one project: I came up with a delegation. It was in the 90s, when it was not clear what kind of relationship we had with America. I made an arrangement with Leonardo DiCaprio and Canadian singer Alanis Morissette. And we with such a company (from our side, I invited Seryozha Solovyov and Lenya Sorochan – both of them are dead) went to Cuba and rested there. DiCaprio had just starred in Titanic, but since there was an Iron Curtain, no one recognized him. We bought cigars illegally, got into some strange situations. A video was shot where Serezha Soloviev tells a crazy crime story about underground workshops. He was an amazing inventor and storyteller.
We laughed and laughed all our lives and came up with different things.
