The Russian State Duma (Duma) in the first reading adopted a bill on life imprisonment for pedophiles-retidivists. This was announced on Tuesday, December 21, in the press service of the Duma.

Currently, the maximum punishment for rape and sexual violence is provided for those previously convicted under these articles and for committing these acts against minors under 14 years of age.

The bill proposes to impose a sentence of life imprisonment in relation to persons who have committed similar repeated crimes, and in relation to all minors under 18 years of age.

Aggravating circumstances

In addition, the State Duma proposed expanding the use of life imprisonment in cases of committing a crime against two or more minors, as well as in situations involving the commission of another grave or especially grave crime.

“We hope that this decision will protect children, families, society as a whole from those who cause irreparable harm,” said Chairman of the State Duma Viacheslav Volodin.

The bill was introduced to the Duma on September 10. The authors were the head of the State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov and Senator Andrei Turchak, as well as the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Alexander Khinshtein.
