State Trooper Hospitalized After Traffic Stop Altercation in Summit Township

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, MI — Michigan State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in gathering visual evidence regarding a traffic stop that resulted in a state trooper being hospitalized on Sunday, September 24.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. when a trooper pulled over a maroon Chrysler 300 for a routine traffic stop in Summit Township, approximately 5 miles southwest of Jackson. The state police reported the incident on their official social media account, X, previously known as Twitter.

An altercation ensued during the traffic stop, leading to the suspect regaining access to his vehicle while the trooper attempted to detain him, as stated in their post. The suspect then sped away at a high rate of speed with the trooper hanging out of the driver’s side window for nearly a mile before the trooper managed to free himself from the moving car.

Following the incident, the trooper was taken to the hospital with minor injuries but has since been released.

Currently, authorities are conducting an ongoing search for the driver. However, the investigation encountered a setback as the trooper’s body camera fell off during the confrontation, potentially removing crucial evidence from the case.

In light of this, state police are urging residents in the neighborhood where the incident took place to review any footage captured by their Ring cameras that may be relevant to the investigation. They are also asking residents to check their property and surrounding areas for any police equipment, such as the missing body-worn camera, which could have been either discarded or fallen off during the altercation.

The confrontation occurred in the vicinity of Cooper, High, and Elm streets.

Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Michigan State Police’s Jackson post at (517) 780-4580.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are hoping to gather essential evidence to aid in solving the case and bring the suspect to justice.
