Statement by the President of the African Development Bank Group, Mr. Akinwumi Adesina, in response to the Libya flood emergency (AfDB Press Release)

On behalf of the African Development Bank Group, I extend our deepest condolences to the communities affected by Mediterranean Storm Daniel in Libya. This storm caused significant loss of life and widespread devastation, particularly in the town of Derna which was most affected.

Libya is a nation already facing many challenges. The escalating death toll, now estimated to approach 5,300, and 10,000 people missing — due to the collapse of dams upstream — poignantly highlights the need for urgent reconstruction to protect lives and ensure means of subsistence.

It is important that the international development community come together to help Libya accelerate the recovery and reconstruction of the affected regions. The African Development Bank Group will do everything in its power to support Libyan communities grappling with this tragedy.

We offer our condolences to the families who are mourning their loved ones. May God give them the strength of soul they need at this difficult time.
