Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ Leads Pack at European Film Awards
The highly anticipated European Film Awards are shaping up to be a major showcase for Norwegian director Joachim Trier, whose family drama Sentimental value has garnered five nominations, positioning it as a frontrunner for the continent’s most prestigious cinematic honors. The awards, often dubbed Europe’s answer to the oscars, were unveiled Tuesday at the Seville European Film Festival in Spain.
Trier’s Sentimental Value, a Cannes Grand Prix winner, is in contention for Best European Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Director. Adding to the film’s strong showing are nominations for led actors Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories, respectively. The film, arriving in cinemas across the UK and Europe this December, centers on a once-celebrated film director, portrayed by Skarsgård, as he attempts to mend fractured relationships with his two daughters.
Though, Trier isn’t the only filmmaker generating meaningful buzz. spanish director Oliver Laxe’s Sirāt, a techno-thriller set against the backdrop of a Moroccan desert rave, has secured four nominations. german filmmaker Mascha Schilinski’s Sound of Falling, wich delves into the complexities of cross-generational trauma within a rural Brandenburg farmhouse, and iranian auteur Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, this year’s Palme d’Or winner, are both nominated for three prizes.
The competition is fierce, with a 15-film shortlist for European Film of the Year encompassing a diverse range of genres, including five animated features and five documentaries. Among the documentary contenders is Andres Veiel’s portrait of controversial Nazi-collaborating filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, and Igor Bezinović’s Fiume o Morte!, which one critic described as a “protofascist Passport to Pimlico.”
This year’s ceremony marks a strategic shift for the european Film Academy, and features the following nominations:
- Best european Film: Sentimental Value, La Grazia, Siràt, Sound of Falling, The Last Viking
- Best European actor: Mads Mikkelsen (The Promised Land), Thomas Schubert (Notebook of a Returnee), Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value), If Weiss (Franz)
