A large-scale theft at an off-site storage facility belonging to the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) has resulted in the loss of more than 1,000 historical items. The incident, which occurred on October 15th around 3:30 am in Oakland, California, prompted a joint investigation by the Oakland Police Department and the FBI’s Art Crimes Team. The museum has recently released a statement following approval from authorities.
Investigation Points to Opportunistic Crime
Initially, details surrounding the theft were limited to avoid hindering the ongoing investigation. However, the OMCA has now stated that investigators believe the incident was not a targeted operation. “Based on the current investigation findings, investigators believe this was a one-time crime rather than a targeted theft,” the museum stated. Authorities indicate there is no evidence suggesting the perpetrators specifically sought out the museum’s archive or particular works of art. Instead, they appear to have gained access and removed items that were easily accessible.
Range of Stolen Historical Relics
The stolen items represent a diverse collection of historical relics. among the losses are six Native American baskets, several pieces of 19th-century scrimshaw, a number of daguerreotypes, modernist metal jewelry, political pins, award ribbons, and commemorative tokens.
The theft of the Native American baskets is of particular concern, with the involved tribes requesting anonymity and limiting the release of further details about the stolen items.
Museum Committed to Recovery and Stewardship
“This is a loss not only to OMCA but to the broader community,” said Lori Fogarty, executive director and CEO of OMCA, in a statement.”The Museum takes its obligation as a steward of California’s historical and cultural heritage with the utmost seriousness and remains committed to recovering stolen objects and ensuring their continued care for future generations.”
The stolen artifacts were housed in a 100,000-square-foot warehouse containing over 2 million historical artifacts, many of which have been donated to the OMCA.
