Stolen Vehicle Chase Ends in Whittier Narrows Recreation Area After Hour-Long Pursuit
Los Angeles, CA – A high-speed chase that began in South Gate and lasted about an hour came to a dramatic end on Tuesday morning in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, approximately 10 miles east of Los Angeles. In a video captured by NewsChopper4, the suspect, carrying a backpack, was seen trying to enter the closed store through the locked sliding doors. After failing to gain entry, the man returned to the stolen vehicle.
As authorities closed in on him, the driver made a bold move. He backed out of the parking space and continued driving in reverse with a sheriff’s department SUV directly in front of him. The risky maneuver caused a collision with another patrol SUV before the suspect decided to turn around and resume his escape on the street.
The chase reached its conclusion when the stolen vehicle found itself trapped at a dead-end near the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. Multiple sheriff’s department vehicles quickly surrounded the suspect, effectively blocking any escape routes. After a brief standoff, the driver finally surrendered and was taken into custody by law enforcement authorities without further incident.
