Weather agencies maintain these lists for a very practical reason. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center explain that assigning simple names helps experts easily communicate warnings to the public and eliminate confusion during fast-moving weather events. The organization selects names that are short, easy to pronounce, and familiar to the regions where they are used.
Current Activity in the Tropics
The current hurricane season has already moved through several rotations of the alphabet.
