Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, with 60 mph sustained winds on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. The storm triggered tropical storm warnings along the Gulf Coast, bringing heavy rainfall, storm surge risks, and flood threats to eastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana.
The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Tropical Storm Edouard struck the upper Gulf Coast at 2:20 p.m. Central time on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. The system was moving northwest at 8 mph. Edouard had maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph when it made landfall near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, close to the border with Texas, at 2:20 p.m. Central time, the hurricane center said. Minimum pressure was recorded at 996 mb.
Edouard formed on Aug. 31, becoming the fifth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. Tropical Storm Edouard strengthened after it was designated as Invest 97L, Potential Tropical Cyclone Five and Tropical Depression Five in less than 24 hours. Forecasters earlier warned that the storm could bring near-hurricane conditions to some areas along the U.S. Gulf Coast. A tropical storm warning is in effect from Texas’ Port Bolivar to Louisiana’s Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line. A hurricane watch extended from High Island, Texas, to Cameron, Louisiana, meaning hurricane conditions were possible.
Landfall Impacts and Coastal Flooding Along the Gulf
Strong thunderstorms were expected to bring powerful wind gusts. The KPRC 2 Weather Team monitored Tropical Storm Edouard as it moved toward Southeast Texas, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and a risk of street flooding to parts of the Houston area. Flood watches and tropical storm warnings are active across coastal and inland counties. At 1 p.m., Entergy Texas had crews rotating shifts for 24-hour response.
Gusty winds and rain moved through Holly Beach, Louisiana, on Sept. 1 as Edouard brought wet weather to the area. Maximum sustained winds held at 60 mph with gusts exceeding 65 mph. Edouard is moving inland and will continue tracking to the northwest throughout the day Tuesday. Dangerous swells are possible along the northwestern Gulf Coast, creating the potential for life-threatening surf and rip currents. Tropical storm watches and warnings remained in effect for the Louisiana and Texas coastlines.
AccuWeather meteorologist Emma Belscher reported that Edward will press inland producing heavy rain, gusty winds and the risk of flooding and tornadoes in parts of eastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana into midweek. With Edward slowly pressing inland, strong winds and storm surge along the upper Texas and Louisiana coasts will ease, but rainfall in parts of eastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana will ramp up into midweek.
Rainfall Totals, Drought Relief, and Regional Weather Shifts
The hurricane center said tropical-storm-force winds are expected to bring heavy rain to southwestern Louisiana and the upper Texas coast, with locally higher amounts of up to 6 or 9 inches in some locations.
North Texas braced for relief from a monthlong heatwave and severe drought as Tropical Storm Edouard moved toward the Texas-Louisiana border, bringing cooler temperatures and desperately needed rain to parts of the region while introducing new challenges for local firefighters. The incoming storm follows a brutal August marked by near-record dry conditions and extreme heat, with most of the region having gone through severe dry weather.
Weakening Trend and What Comes Next
As the storm moved, Edouard quickly weakened and headed northward, returning rain chances to North Texas for the next several days, with the highest coverage of rain expected to be south and east of the Metroplex.
