Sister’s Desperate Swim to Rescue Boat After Storm Hits Lake Getaway

Sisters Nina (51) and Linn (42) faced an unexpected ordeal on a planned idyllic escape to an islet, culminating in a daring swim after their boat drifted away in a sudden storm.

Nes municipality, Norway – What began as a serene afternoon for sisters Nina Frafjord Søvdsnes, 51, and Linn Høye, 42, on Wednesday transformed into a dramatic rescue mission. The pair had set out on their inflatable boat, affectionately nicknamed “the river pig,” for a peaceful retreat on Lake Sagstus. Their destination: a small islet, promising quiet surroundings and a chance to enjoy the summer heat.

Storm’s Fury Unleased

The sisters had just settled onto the islet, preparing to hang their hammocks, when a fierce wind swept across the lake. “This was followed by a proper rain,” recalled Søvdsnes, who noted she had never experienced anything like it in her years living in Eastern Norway.

Before they could secure their inflatable craft, the “river pig” capsized and was swept away by the wind and water. “It was either the boat or the hammock,” Søvdsnes recounted with a laugh. “Then it was the boat.”

No Immediate Rescue

After realizing their predicament, the sisters attempted to get help. Søvdsnes posted a plea on a local Facebook group: “If anyone has been thinking about canoeing in the area, we ask for help with the towing of the docking boat to the islet where we sit grounded. Thank you in advance. Greeting two ladies in shipbuilding.”

However, their call for assistance went unanswered. With no rescue in sight, Linn Høye took matters into her own hands. She plunged into the water, swimming approximately 100 meters in just her underwear to retrieve the wayward boat. “It is surprisingly heavy when you are afraid to get stuck in something,” she commented.

A Romantic Getaway, Almost

By the time Linn had managed to secure the boat to a tree on the islet, the sisters were eager to regain some warmth. Their clothes, left on shore, were drying in the wind.

Despite the unexpected turn of events, the sisters could finally relax. “You often have a romantic idea of how the trip should be, but it doesn’t always be what you imagine,” Søvdsnes remarked, adding with a laugh that another storm seemed to be on the horizon.
