Speculation was rife this week around Joe Biden and the strange marks seen on the face of the American president. But the deputy White House spokesman finally lifted the lid on the mystery on Wednesday: the horizontal lines spotted on the 80-year-old man’s skin are caused by a treatment mask for sleep apnea.

The marks were noticed by reporters who follow the US president earlier this week and again on Wednesday when he left Washington for Chicago.

The Democrat uses a sleep apnea treatment tool (CPAP in English), so let Andrew Bates know. These masks, sometimes used to prevent snoring, have rubber bands to hold the device around the nose.

Joe Biden has “disclosed his history of sleep apnea in numerous medical reports” since 2008, the spokesperson added. “He used a CPAP machine last night, which is typical for people with that background,” Andrew Bates said.

Joe Biden, born in 1942, is the oldest US president in office, and his health is the focus of all attention. If he manages to be re-elected in 2024, he would be 86 at the end of his second term.
