Sadie Sink’s Coma Performance & The Bittersweet End of ‘Stranger Things’

The fate of Max Mayfield remains a central question as fans await the final season of Netflix’s hit series, Stranger Things. Following a harrowing battle with Vecna in Season 4,Max (played by Sadie Sink) was left in a coma, leaving viewers to wonder if this marks the character’s last appearance.

Showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer have praised Sink’s performance in the role, even while remaining tight-lipped about her future on the show.”I think Sadie gives the best coma performance of all time,” one of the Duffer brothers remarked to Gold Derby. “Like, its very, very believable.I don’t know whether that will get her an Emmy, but it should.”

During a recent extensive Q&A,the Duffer brothers discussed the influences that shaped the series, including a surprising story about coaxing director frank Darabont out of retirement. Darabont, known for his work on The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead, will direct episodes 3 and 5 of the upcoming season after a chance encounter sparked by his recognition for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. The showrunners explained that the writers’ strike initially impacted their plans, leading them to Darabont after another director, Dan Trachtenberg, became unavailable due to commitments to Predator: Badlands.

The brothers also reflected on their growth as storytellers over the past decade, acknowledging their initial inexperience when working on season 1. They admitted to being tempted to revisit and improve the visual effects from the early seasons, stating they’d like to “George Lucas” some of them, but ultimately refrained. They also emphasized the importance of collaboration with actors and the invaluable guidance they received from experienced crew members.

Looking ahead, Stranger Things is expanding its universe with an animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, set to premiere in 2026. The decision to set the series between Seasons 2 and 3 was driven by a desire to capture the characters at a specific age and explore a narrative gap without revisiting previously explored storylines.

The final season of Stranger Things is slated for a three-part release on Netflix, beginning November 26th with the first four episodes. Parts two (three episodes) and three (the series finale) will follow on December 25th and December 31st, respectively. The Duffer brothers described the finale as both “bittersweet” and “surprising,” acknowledging the emotional weight of concluding such a defining cultural phenomenon.

In a lighter moment during the Q&A, the showrunners playfully discussed awards for their characters. Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) was deemed the “Best Dressed,” consistently maintaining a stylish look even during monster hunts, while Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) earned the title of “Best Hair.” When discussing defining character moments, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was highlighted for her heroic feats in Seasons 1 and 2, vanquishing the Demogorgon and closing the Rift. Though, the brothers also praised a surprising moment of heroism from Steve in Season 1, noting how the character’s charm led them to expand his role.

The most emotionally resonant scene, according to the Duffer brothers, involved Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair) holding Sadie sink (Max) and calling for his sister, a moment they found particularly heartbreaking. They also lauded Millie Bobby Brown’s performance while reading Hopper’s (David Harbour) letter, noting that she intentionally avoided hearing the letter beforehand to capture a genuine emotional reaction on camera.

The creators also revealed the formative influences that shaped their creative vision, citing The Lord of the Rings, Tim Burton’s distinct style (particularly Batman), Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead films, and the works of M. Night Shyamalan and Steven Spielberg.

Ultimately, the Duffer brothers anticipate a poignant conclusion to Stranger Things, promising a finale that will resonate with fans for years to come.
