A diagnosis of womb cancer prompted actress Alex Kingston to embrace life’s opportunities, leading her to compete on the popular BBC show Strictly Come Dancing. The ER and Doctor Who star, 62, publicly shared her 2023 health battle, emphasizing the importance of proactive health checks for women.
Kingston, who recently topped the Strictly leaderboard with partner Johannes Radebe, revealed she initially dismissed her symptoms as a natural part of aging. “I had assumed that the way I was feeling was old age, and I just sort of accepted it,” she told The Independent. “I thought, ‘OK, this is what it’s like to be in my sixties.’ But a lot of how I was feeling was to do with my illness.”
A Shock Diagnosis and Challenging Treatment
The actress’s journey to diagnosis began after experiencing persistent bloating and aches, ultimately leading her to seek medical attention when she noticed blood in her urine. “I never went down the cancer road in my head,” Kingston explained. “It was a shock, because I have a very positive outlook on life in general.” Despite recognizing her body was signaling a serious issue, she initially attributed her symptoms to less severe conditions like a urinary tract infection or fibroids.
2024 became dominated by the diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Kingston underwent a hysterectomy and radiation therapy, a process she described as consuming a “huge part of my life.” She even experienced a frightening haemorrhage while performing in The Other Boleyn Girl at Chichester Festival Theater in April and May 2024.
Fortunately, following medical evaluation after the show’s run, doctors resolute the cancer was localized to her fallopian tubes and had not spread to the ovaries. “the minute I had the operation, I suddenly felt like myself again,” Kingston stated.
Advocating for Women’s Health
Kingston is now using her platform to encourage other women to prioritize their health and seek medical attention when experiencing concerning symptoms. She stressed the importance of regular check-ups and not dismissing potential warning signs.
From ‘ER’ and ‘Doctor Who’ to the Dance Floor
Kingston is widely recognized for her roles as Dr. Elizabeth Corday in the long-running US medical drama ER and as River Song in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who (2008-2015). Her current participation in Strictly Come Dancing with professional partner johannes Radebe has captivated audiences, with the pair achieving the highest score on the leaderboard last week with their samba.
The actress revealed that her recent health experience directly inspired her decision to join the show. “Life is too short” not to pursue opportunities, she said, embracing the chance to challenge herself and enjoy a new experience.
