Palaniappan hails from Sirukudalpatti in Sivagangai district. He used to work in a private gas cylinder office in Karaikudi. Today, as usual, he loaded cylinders on a two-wheeler and was going on a two-wheeler in Karaikudi, Father Periyar Nagar area to deliver them.
Stronger than normal winds were blowing in the area today as an echo of Cyclone Mantus. Then, the mirror fixed on the 3rd floor of the flat suddenly shifted and fell on Palaniappan’s neck as he tried to cross the area. In this, Palaniappan was seriously injured when the glass cut his neck and he collapsed there in a pool of blood. Seeing this, the local people immediately rescued him and sent him to Karaikudi Government Hospital.
The doctors who examined Palaniappan there said that he had already died. Subsequently, the Karaikudi police registered a case and are investigating the matter.
It is also said that a glass has been moved and fallen from the same apartment once before. In this situation, the public demanded that such harmful window glasses should be removed immediately. The fire department was then informed and all the windows in the apartment were removed. However, the death of the worker caused grief to the victim’s family.
