A memorable big festival of Bengali films was held in New York. The curtain came down on the Suchitra Sen International Film Festival. Awards were presented in various categories on Sunday, the last day of the two-day festival at the Jamaica Performing Arts Centre. In this, 25 awards were given in the category of immigrants from Bangladesh, India and these two countries. Bangladeshi movie ‘Mike’ directed by FM Shaheen and Hasan Zafarul was awarded in the children’s film category.
The best film awards at the festival went to Hawa (Bangladesh), Doansh (India) and Radio (Immigrant). Suchitra Sen Honorary Awards were presented by Bangladeshi hero Ferdous Ahmed, Indian actress Rituparna Sengupta and film director Reshmi Mitra.
Apart from this, Mejbaur Rahman Suman (Hawa) and Sayan Bandyopadhyay (India) won the Best Director and Hridi Haque (Bangladesh) and Abhijit Sridas (India) won the Best Debut Director respectively. Best Actor (Male Bangladesh) Chanchal Chowdhury, jointly with Prasenjit and Kaushik Ganguly (India) and Rajub Bhowmik (Immigrants). Nazifa Tushi (Bangladesh), Payal Sarkar (India) and Cindy Rowling (Immigrant) were selected as the best actress (Female Bangladesh). Best Cinematographer Kamrul Hasan Khosru (Bangladesh) and Shubojit Roy (India). Short Films Churat (Bangladesh), Rajnigandha (India) and Light Camera Mega! He received the third Ripu (Immigrant) award. Docufilm received the award. Noorun Nabi: A lifelong freedom fighter (immigrant-Bangladeshi), Baul: Saul of Bengal (immigrant-Indian).
Film Mike (Bangladesh) and Manik Kaku’s Camera (India) in the children’s category. Shakib Khan and Tama Mirza were selected as the Best Performer (Male) and Best Performer (Female) in the popular category.
The two-day event at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in New York on April 20 and 21 was packed. Both days the five hundred seater hall was filled to the brim.
