The Sudanese Army today accused the Rapid Support Forces (FAR) paramilitary group of attacking the Alia specialized hospital in Um Durman with artillery, where former dictator Omar al Bashir (1989-2019) has been hospitalized since he was transferred from prison where He was serving his sentence half a year ago.

In a statement, the Armed Forces indicated that the paramilitaries carried out artillery attacks against the facility located in Um Durman, “resulting in significant damage to the kidney dialysis center, intensive care unit, and operating room, as well as several rooms.”

At least one patient was injured, according to the note.

In addition, recalled that the paramilitaries already attacked another hospital on Saturday, which caused the death of five people and more than twenty wounded.

The uniformed officers, however, did not mention Al Bashir, who last December was transferred from the prison where he had been since he was overthrown in 2019 to this hospital, where he was admitted to monitor the state of health of the almost eighty-year-old former president.

Al Bashir, overthrown in the so-called 2019 Sudanese revolution, entered Kober prison after being found guilty of illicit enrichment, among other charges, while his trial is underway for the coup he perpetrated in 1989 and which gave him access to power for three decades.

The former dictator and other members of his leadership were already admitted to the hospital at the beginning of 2022 for medical follow-up, but they were returned to the Kober prison on November 10 by a decision of the “higher authorities of the State”.

The former president and 27 of his officials, including ministers and the military, have appeared before a special court since July 2020 and face charges such as “undermining the constitutional system for participating in the 1989 coup,” something that could carry the death penalty.

The conflict in Sudan, which began on April 15 of this year, has already claimed the lives of more than 3,100 civilians and has caused the internal and external displacement of more than 3.1 million peopleaccording to the UN.
