Indonesia’s Finance Ministry has signaled its readiness to deploy additional emergency funds to address the widespread devastation caused by recent floods and landslides across the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.Though, the disbursement of these funds is currently stalled pending a formal request from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
The scale of the disaster is significant, with reports indicating 836 confirmed fatalities and tens of thousands of residents displaced. Extensive damage to homes and infrastructure has been reported across the affected regions, prompting a large-scale relief effort.
Funding Awaits Formal Request
“We are waiting for a request from BNPB,” a senior official stated on Friday from Bali. While the precise amount of the additional funding remains undisclosed, the official emphasized the government’s commitment to providing necessary resources. “If there’s a shortfall, it can be calculated. The funds are ready,” they added.
Currently, the BNPB possesses an existing budget of approximately Rp500-600 billion (US$29-35 million) allocated for immediate emergency disaster management. Any additional funding will be sourced from the State Budget’s emergency disaster fund and channeled through the Additional expenditure Budget (ABT) mechanism, which the Ministry confirmed is prepared for immediate activation upon receiving the BNPB’s request.
Budgetary Concerns Amidst Crisis
The announcement arrives shortly after the finalization of the BNPB’s 2025 budget allocation, which has been set at Rp2.01 trillion (US$116 million). This represents a substantial decrease from the Rp4.92 trillion (US$287 million) allocated to the agency in 2024, raising questions about the long-term capacity of Indonesia’s disaster response infrastructure.
Joint military and civilian teams are currently engaged in ongoing evacuation, search operations, road clearance, and aid distribution efforts. A special task force has also been established in the impacted areas to coordinate the response.
The situation remains fluid, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The timely submission of a funding request by the BNPB will be crucial in ensuring that adequate resources are available to support the recovery and rebuilding process.
