Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday appointed former New Zealand fast bowler James Franklin as their fast bowling coach for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Franklin thus replaced South African fast bowler Dale Steyn, who had requested the franchise to give him a break this season due to personal reasons. The franchise has also changed its captain before the new season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad announced on their social media platform, ‘Dale Steyn will not be joining the team this season due to personal reasons, due to which the responsibility of fast bowling coach has been given to James Franklin this season. You’re welcome James. Franklin, who played 31 Tests, 110 ODIs and 38 T20 Internationals for New Zealand between 2001 and 2013, represented Mumbai Indians in the 2011 and 2012 IPL seasons.

This will be his first stint as a coach in IPL. The 43-year-old Franklin has experience of coaching Durham in English county cricket and has also been the assistant coach of Pakistan Super League team Islamabad United. At Sunrisers Hyderabad, Franklin will join his former teammate Daniel Vettori who was appointed the head coach of the team after the 2023 IPL. Sunrisers Hyderabad will begin their campaign in IPL 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 23 at the Eden Gardens.

Hyderabad has been waiting for the IPL title since 2016. Then the team became champion under the captaincy of David Warner. Since then in 2018 the team reached the finals but had to face defeat. Last season, the team was at the last position in the table with 4 wins in 14 matches.
