Super Nintendo World is celebrating a milestone, marking five years since its debut in Japan with a vibrant array of new merchandise, decorations, and activities. The festivities, beginning March 18, come as fans eagerly anticipate potential expansions to the popular theme park, with rumors swirling about the addition of attractions based on the “Pokémon,” “Zelda,” and “Luigi’s Mansion” franchises. Universal Studios Japan announced the anniversary celebration, promising a festive atmosphere for visitors.
The park has been steadily expanding its offerings. Recent additions include a highly anticipated Donkey Kong-themed area, which has already opened at Universal Studios Orlando and is slated for a debut in Japan, though the opening has faced delays. The expansion features a new roller coaster and immersive environments inspired by the beloved Nintendo franchise. The Donkey Kong area has been a focal point of excitement for park-goers, with details and previews shared throughout 2023 and 2024.
Anniversary Festivities and New Merchandise
To commemorate its fifth anniversary, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan is rolling out a series of special offerings. Perhaps most notably, the character meet-and-greets will now include Yoshi for the first time, offering a new opportunity for fans to interact with their favorite Nintendo characters.
Beyond the experiences, a range of exclusive merchandise will be available. This includes a new “Invincible” themed Power-Up Band, allowing guests to enhance their interactive experiences within the park. Future Expansion Possibilities
While the fifth anniversary celebrations are underway, speculation continues regarding the potential expansion of Super Nintendo World. Rumors have suggested that areas themed around “Pokémon,” “The Legend of Zelda,” and “Luigi’s Mansion” could be added in the future. These rumors gained traction after observant fans noticed subtle references to “Zelda” within the existing Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan, including imagery of Princess Zelda and Link in the Nintendo Super Star Store.
Universal has not officially confirmed any expansion plans beyond the Donkey Kong area. However, the continued success of Super Nintendo World and the popularity of Nintendo’s franchises suggest that further development is likely. As Universal Studios Japan prepares to celebrate its fifth anniversary, fans remain hopeful for announcements regarding the future of this immersive and beloved theme park.
