Mancuso, who returned to the country on February 27, 2024 after staying in the United States since May 2008, was facing various judicial processes that raised doubts about his fate. However, on the afternoon of May 9, the Superior Court of Bogotá issued a key decision that marks a new direction in his legal situation.

Magistrate José Manuel Parra was in charge of announcing the decision, which implies that Mancuso will no longer be held in the maximum security yard of the La Picota prison, in Bogotá. This measure represents a turn in the situation of the former leader of the Armed Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, who expressed his desire to work for the benefit of the victims of the armed conflict in the country.

Mancuso’s release from prison is conditional on the absence of other judicial requirements against him. Judge Parra explained that Mancuso’s intramural preventive detentions will be replaced by other measures, under the obligation to subscribe to a premonitory defense that includes commitments related to the truth and the delivery of assets.
