The country’s Supreme Court on Friday declared 16 laws enacted by Malaysia’s Kelantan state government based on Islamic religious law, Sharia, invalid.

The Perikathan party, which is the opposition party in the center, is ruling in the Klanthan province. The provincial government enacted new laws that provided sharia-based punishments for various crimes such as sex crimes, cross-dressing, and perjury.

However, the Supreme Court said that the provincial laws would cause confusion in the religious fundamental laws already enacted by the central government and that it would cancel those laws.
