Passenger ships from the Comoros are temporarily banned from entering Madagascar due to the spread of cholera in the region. The Malagasy government has suspended maritime traffic linking the two destinations until the outbreak is brought under control, while allowing ships carrying strategic goods to dock with crew remaining on board.

Preventive measures have been taken, such as chemo-prophylactic treatments for air arrivals from countries affected by cholera, notably at Mahajanga airport. With 105 confirmed cases and 6 deaths in Comoros, the WHO reports a sharp increase in cholera in Africa, mainly in Eastern and Southern Africa.

In Madagascar, cholera has not yet been detected, but the country is preparing for its possible arrival. Recent floods have increased the risks of spread, highlighting hygiene challenges with poor access to drinking water and precarious sanitation practices. The Ministry of Health has deployed tests and medicines across the island to treat the disease should it occur.
