Bengaluru – A 21-year-old engineering student and a swami of another mutt have been arrested in connection with the hanging of Lingayat mutt Swami Basavalinga mutt. Police found that Swami committed suicide after getting stuck in a honey trap.
Swami was found hanging dead in Kanjungal Bande, Ramanagara, Karnataka. The student and Swamy were caught after an investigation focused on the suicide note found in the room. Police said that Basavalinga was befriended and threatened by recording private videos.
Since April, the girl has been recording Swami’s nude pictures through video calls. Mrityunjaya Swami of the Kannur Math, who was hostile to Basavalinga, also had a hand in this. The girl and Mrityunjaya started threatening Basavalinga. Both of them took a huge amount from Swami. They also demanded to vacate the position.
It was decided to trap Basavalinga when there was a problem with the swamis of the Kannur Math. Police questioned 25 people in connection with the case. It was also found that only these two are related in the incident. Swami Sivamurthy Muruka of Muruka Mutt was arrested in connection with the molestation of schoolgirls and the fear of being arrested also led to suicide, the police said. Forty-five-year-old Swami was found hanging dead on October 24. Basavalinga has been the head of the Kanjungal Bande Math since 1997.
