The Hungarian parliament finally voted on Monday for Sweden to join NATO, a big step towards full membership. However, Sweden’s application to join the alliance has not yet reached the desk of acting President László Köver.

As reported by Day.Az, an outspoken critic of Sweden may prefer that the document be signed by President-elect Tamás Sulök next week.

The Swedish government expected to see its national flag raised outside NATO headquarters as early as Friday this week. The final steps towards ratification by Hungary are taking longer than expected.

Hungarian expert Anders Blomqvist believes that technical issues take time and points to the instability of presidential power. On Monday, parliament accepted the resignation of Katalin Nowak, which was submitted after it became known that she pardoned a man convicted of sexual abuse in an orphanage.

Tamás Sulök will take office as head of state on March 5.
