Switzerland approved its first direct spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors on October 20, 2026. Managed by BIT Asset Management and branded as the Bitcoin Fund ETF, the product provides direct digital asset exposure under Swiss collective investment laws with trading slated to begin in November on the SIX Swiss Exchange.
The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority cleared the path for mainstream cryptocurrency exposure by approving the country’s first spot Bitcoin ETF for retail investors on October 20, 2026. While financial regulators in the United States opened their markets to spot Bitcoin funds in January 2024, accumulating roughly 109 billion dollars in assets, Switzerland’s decision marks a European first for a domestically domiciled retail product holding the underlying cryptocurrency directly.
Switzerland Approves First Spot Bitcoin ETF
Zurich-based BIT Asset Management emerged as the backer behind the new vehicle, officially named the Bitcoin Fund ETF (BBIT). Chief executive Dominik Oggenfuss confirmed that the firm aimed to construct a natively Swiss vehicle handling everything from fund management to custody and exchange listing within domestic borders.
Unlike traditional exchange-traded products listed in Zurich that function primarily as debt securities, the BBIT is structured as a collective investment of capital under Swiss law. The product will follow a passive strategy without utilizing derivatives or securities lending, and investors can access it through standard securities accounts.
BIT Asset Management is part of the internationally active BIT Group. Founded in 2019, the group provides asset management, infrastructure, financing, digital asset custody, and trading services.
When the regulatory green light was initially announced on Tuesday, the supervisory authority withheld specific provider details and fund names, citing institutional privacy policies before the asset manager subsequently revealed its identity to the AWP news agency on Wednesday.
Regulators Grant Risk Diversification Exemption
Ordinarily, Swiss fund legislation enforces strict risk distribution rules requiring portfolios to spread assets across multiple holdings. The regulatory agency granted an explicit exemption for this vehicle, pointing to the long trading history and high trading volume of Bitcoin compared to other digital assets.
The supervisory body classified the vehicle as an other fund for alternative investments, a category associated with distinct risks. In 2021, the regulator approved a crypto fund restricted strictly to qualified investors utilizing a multi-asset cryptocurrency basket, whereas the new vehicle opens direct participation to the general public.
Supervising authorities require managers to enforce rigorous operational risk controls and secure cold-storage custody solutions in alignment with supervisory guidelines issued on January 12, 2026.

FINMA stated that The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA is approving the first retail fund investing directly in Bitcoins, focusing in the process on investor protection and transparency.
Fund Lists on SIX Swiss Exchange
Market pricing fluctuated around the announcement, with Bitcoin trading near 81,300 dollars on October 20 and shifting to around 81,460 dollars, or 72,632 euros, by Tuesday afternoon. Additional fund managers have submitted applications or indicated plans to seek approvals as competition develops.
While structured notes known as ETPs have traded on the exchange since WisdomTree launched its BTCW product in 2019 and CoinShares introduced the Bitcoin Tracker One ETN in Sweden back in 2015—with industry tracking data from Investrends showing 217 such products from 21 issuers active by July 2026—the new fund provides distinct bankruptcy protections as special-asset property segregated from the management company in the event of insolvency.
The fund will list on the SIX Swiss Exchange in Zurich during November, offering physical backing where coins are kept in cold storage with a Swiss custodian bank, and management fees will be disclosed closer to the launch date.
