Area of activity

The Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SGPGHE/SSGHNP) represents all pediatricians who have specialized in the field or show a deeper interest in this area of focus. The SGPGHE meets twice a year for plenary sessions, each with an administrative/professional and a further education/scientific part.

The aim of the company is to offer children and young people with acute and chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas, as well as nutritional issues, child-friendly assessment and treatment options. We also promote the field and support further education and training as well as research in Switzerland.

Continuing education

The further training for the specialist title lasts 3 years, of which 1 year can be completed as part of the further training to become a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine. We encourage and support our fellows to gain international experience during a stay abroad in order to deepen their knowledge in certain areas.

Specialist examination

In 2023, 2 candidates took the specialist examination and successfully passed it, for which we warmly congratulate.

Pediatric Gastro-Weekend

Our annual gastro weekend takes place in spring. Young doctors in further training to become pediatricians have the opportunity to work on, present and discuss gastroenterological, hepatological and nutritional issues together with a tutor during a two-day course in Gunten on Lake Thun in a small group.

Educational Grant

We award training grants every year. All doctors in training, as well as trained pediatricians who work in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, can apply. The maximum amount is CHF 2,000 per 6 months and can be divided among several applicants. Find financial participation

  • active participation (posters, presentations) in scientific congresses in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition
  • attending a summer school or an endoscopy course organized by our sister societies at international level (ESPGHAN, GFHGNP or GPGE)
  • as well as taking part in courses or internships to improve research skills.

The submission deadlines (letter of motivation, CV, and academic work) are March 31st and September 30th of the respective calendar year. The application must be supported by a member of the SGPGHE and sent to Prof. Dr. R. Furlano should be sent ([email protected]).

National and international networking

There is close clinical and scientific collaboration between the individual Swiss centers. We actively support the Swiss IBD cohort study (www.ibdcohort.ch) and the Swiss Autoimmune Hepatitis cohort study (FONDAZIONE EPATOCENTRO).

Our members are also well connected internationally in the German, French, European and Anglo-American sister societies for pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition (GPGE, GFHGNP, ESPGHAN, NASPGHAN).
