Thailand-Cambodia Border Dispute Escalates Amid Landmine Accusations
A landmine blast on July 16th, injuring a Thai soldier and severing a colleague’s ankle, has ignited a diplomatic crisis between Thailand and Cambodia, triggering five days of hostilities and raising concerns about the use of newly planted PMN-2 mines. The incident has exposed a long-simmering tension along the disputed border and prompted accusations of deliberate mine-laying.
A haunting image emerged from the conflict: a Cambodian primary school principal surveying a kindergarten classroom destroyed by earlier Thai military bombing. This visual underscores the devastating human cost of the ongoing border disputes.
Rising Tensions and Mutual Accusations
Thailand alleges that Cambodia strategically placed the mines along sections of their shared frontier, asserting that PMN-2 mines – Soviet-origin explosives – have caused injuries to at least six Thai soldiers since July. These accusations center on the claim that the mines are newly deployed, violating previous agreements between Phnom Penh and Bangkok not to utilize them.
Cambodia vehemently denies these charges. Instead, Cambodian officials contend that Thai soldiers inadvertently triggered ordnance remnants from the country’s decades-long civil war, a conflict that left Cambodia among the most heavily mined nations globally.
Evidence and Expert Analysis
The Thai military granted Reuters access to videos and photographs documenting demining operations conducted by its troops near the site of the July 16th incident, as well as a separate mine explosion on July 23rd. A review of the metadata from seven images provided by Thailand revealed they were captured concurrently with Thai demining efforts between July 18th and 23rd, aligning with details outlined in two military documents concerning landmines along the border.
Crucially, four independent landmine experts examined the images and concluded that the PMN-2 mines depicted appeared to have been recently laid. However, the analysts were unable to definitively determine who was responsible for their placement.
Calls for Impartial Investigation
The Cambodian governmental agency responsible for overseeing demining activities emphasized that a conclusive determination regarding the incidents requires an impartial, third-party investigation. This call for neutrality highlights the sensitivity of the situation and the need for an unbiased assessment of the evidence.
A Thai foreign ministry spokesperson stated that Bangkok’s investigations confirmed the landmines that injured Thai soldiers were newly planted PMN-2s. “They were found in new condition, still with clearly visible markings,” the spokesperson said, reinforcing Thailand’s position.
The situation remains volatile, underscoring the urgent need for a transparent and impartial investigation to de-escalate tensions and prevent further loss of life along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
