“The Mitsotakis government is sacrificing workers on the altar of the platform”

The MEP Costas Arvanitis and the head of Labor of SYRIZA-PS Giorgos Gavrilos launched an attack against the New Democracy government in a joint statement, with the reason being the collapse of the platform workers’ agreement.

As they complain, the government contributed “to a major setback for the labor rights of platform workers” as it opposed the proposed European Directive to improve the working conditions of those who work through a digital platform.

“The Mitsotakis government turned its back on Macron in order not to approve the proposed text of the Directive, which was reached just a week ago by the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, after tough and months-long negotiations. As a result, the further delay in the issuance of the Directive, which leaves millions of workers in Greece and Europe facing the unscrupulousness of platform companies, job insecurity and inhumane working conditions without basic collective rights under the false self-employment regime,” the executives characteristically emphasize SYRIZA.

They also accuse New Democracy of “essentially opposing provisions that are very positive for workers, such as:

Shifting the burden of proof that those working on platforms are not employees but self-employed to companies. The obligation of national authorities to verify that platform workers are not falsely self-employed. Access for millions of workers to basic rights such as paid leave , retirement, social security, etc., as they will not be considered self-employed but employed.”

The SYRIZA executives note that the government and the competent Labor Minister Adonis Georgiadis “had to choose between defending the workers or satisfying the lobbies of the platform companies – who are struggling to avoid the costs that their workers’ access to labor and social rights. Of course, after the domestic implementation of policies which changed 8 hours to 13 hours, made the 6-day work a regime, abolished SEPE in essence, criminalized trade unionism and opened the way for the weakening of collective labor agreements and the “blooming” of flexible forms of work , we are not surprised that once again the Government chooses to turn its back on the workers”.

In any case, SYRIZA emphasizes that “the battle is not over”, stating that “negotiations will restart with the new year and the progressive forces of Europe will rise to the occasion, defending both in Europe and in Greece the right to stable and protected work, against those who want an anarchic labor landscape so that certain big employers can get rich. SY.RIZ.A.-PS will be present in this battle, as it has been from the beginning, with the decisive contribution of the MEP Kostas Arvanitis in shaping the text of the Directive in the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the EP and the nomination of issue at national and European level. Always with the interests of the workers in mind and the achievement of real social justice”.
