Химки, Russia – A quiet tournament of table hockey has brought a spark of normalcy and camaraderie to veterans undergoing treatment at the Burdenko Hospital, offering a welcome respite from the physical and emotional challenges of recovery. Organized in the lead-up to the February 23rd Defender of the Fatherland Day, the event provided a space for these men, who have served in the Special Military Operation (SVO), to reconnect with a simple joy from their past and find renewed connection with one another. The power of a familiar game, like table hockey, to evoke positive memories and foster a sense of community proved to be a powerful tool in supporting their well-being.
For many of the veterans, the tabletop game wasn’t just a pastime; it was a portal back to childhood. “Well, how else can I say it, I played this as a kid,” shared Mikhail, a veteran of the SVO, reflecting on the nostalgic appeal of the game. “We only had games like this when I was growing up. So, you could say I’ve loved playing games like this since childhood.” The classic setup – the red team versus Canada – resonated with a shared history and provided a lighthearted focal point for the afternoon.
The initiative to bring this activity to the hospital came as a deliberate effort to combat the isolation and potential for post-traumatic stress that can accompany recovery. Recognizing the physical limitations of some of the veterans, organizers from the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation sought an engaging activity that could be enjoyed by all. “We decided to hold a table hockey tournament in this format,” explained Nina Mazhaeva, Deputy Head of the Regional Branch of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation in the Moscow Region. “It’s a fairly active tabletop sport that unites people.”
The event also drew the support of local officials, with Inna Fedotova, Head of the Khimki City District, visiting the hospital to express gratitude for the veterans’ service. “I want to say thank you for your service, for your honor and dignity, and for your love of our Motherland,” Fedotova said, addressing the men. “Today, I want to wish you all the best. I see that you are already in a great mood and preparing for the tournament. I wish you bright impressions and victories. Thank you very much once again.”
The tournament itself was a simple affair, but the impact was profound. While awards and accolades were secondary to the experience, the veterans approached the competition with enthusiasm. The organizers emphasized that the goal wasn’t just about winning, but about fostering a sense of camaraderie and providing a distraction from the challenges of recovery. The event served as a reminder that even small gestures can have a significant impact on those who have served their country.
Table hockey, while seemingly a simple game, has a dedicated following in Russia. According to the official website of the Russian Table Hockey Federation, the sport has a rich history and is played on STIGA Play-Off models, with championships governed by the International Table Hockey Federation (ITHF) since 1989 Russian Table Hockey Federation. The Russian national team first participated in the World Championship in 2001, and in 2011…
The Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation’s approach reflects a growing understanding of the importance of social reintegration and adaptation for veterans. The foundation’s work extends beyond providing immediate support, focusing on helping veterans navigate the transition back to civilian life. The choice of table hockey as an activity highlights the power of familiar, accessible pastimes in facilitating this process. A recent ranking of table hockey games by MarkaKachestva.ru lists the STIGA Play Off model as a top choice, known for its maneuverability and authentic feel.
As the veterans returned to their wards, the atmosphere was noticeably lighter. The tournament, though modest in scale, had succeeded in its aim: to provide a moment of joy, connection, and a reminder of simpler times. The event underscored the importance of finding innovative ways to support the well-being of those who have served, and the enduring power of a shared game to bring people together.
The Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation plans to continue its work with veterans in the Moscow region, focusing on initiatives that promote social inclusion and psychological well-being. Further events and programs are scheduled throughout the year, with a particular emphasis on activities that cater to the diverse needs and interests of the veteran community. Updates on these initiatives can be found on the foundation’s website.
