The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that it had detected 26 aircraft and five Chinese ships in the vicinity of the island during the past 24 hours.

The ministry said in a statement, “17 of these aircraft crossed the middle line and entered the north and center of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ).”

Last Saturday, the ministry announced that it had monitored the flight of 22 Chinese aircraft in less than three hours in the airspace surrounding Taiwan.

These air sorties come less than a month before the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-tei, on May 20, and Beijing considers the new president a dangerous separatist.

The Middle Line represents an unofficial but largely adhered to border that runs along the middle of the Strait separating Taiwan and China. This line was established during the Cold War in an attempt to separate the two opposing sides and reduce the risk of clashes.
